UN Complaint for Urgent Action to the United Nations on the human rights violations faced by Phichit and Phetchabun villagers in relation to the activities of the Chatree gold mine in Thailand
November 2025
In Phichit Province, Central Thailand, the Chatree Gold Mine, operated by Akara Resources, a Thai subsidiary of Australia’s Kingsgate Consolidated Limited, has long affected nearby communities. Since operations began in 2001, more than 6,000 villagers in Phichit and neighbouring Phetchabun Provinces have suffered from water and soil contamination, health problems, and loss of livelihoods caused by the mine’s activities.
Following two decades of injustice faced by these villagers, Manushya, on behalf of the affected communities, filed a complaint on 19 July 2024 to 13 UN Special Procedures, including the UN Working Group on Business & Human Rights, exposing human rights violations and calling for justice.
Our UN Complaint exposes how the mine’s activities coupled with the authorities’ failures to take adequate measures have led to multiple human rights violations. Informed by villagers’ experiences and testimonies, the complaint tells their stories, their truth — placing their lives at the center. The complaint also exposes other harmful practices such as corruption, international arbitration proceedings and “greenwashing”.
This is an updated version of the UN Complaint originally submitted on 19 July 2024. It includes additional information shared with UN experts, while excluding confidential details that were removed prior to making our UN Complaint public in November 2025.
