Thai Human Rights Research Intern

Description of Duties & Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Advisor, the intern would be based with Manushya Foundation,
in Bangkok, Thailand, or would be home-based, and would primarily support translation and research
related to human rights challenges in Cambodia, Laos, Nepal and Thailand:
• Conduct research and analysis on the human rights situation in Asia, in particular: research and
writing on human rights and development issues of marginalised groups in Cambodia, Laos, Nepal
and Thailand;
• Prepare case studies for advocacy purposes at the national and international level;
• Support the development of concept notes, policy papers, and contribute to knowledge products for
Cambodia, Laos, Nepal and Thailand;
• Support awareness raising on human rights issues, including: updates to Manushya Foundations’
social media; development of blog posts and website stories;
• Assist in translating documents and social media content from English into Thai and vice versa;
• Update terminology database and keep glossaries of technical terms;
• Support all aspects leading up to consultations and workshops, including collaborating with regional
and national partners on the agenda and organisation of meetings, among other administrative
tasks;
• Assist in any other relevant tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Starting date: The intern is expected to start as soon as possible.

Business and Human Rights Intern

Description of Duties & Responsibilities

 

Under the supervision of the Executive Director and the Research & Advocacy Team members, the intern would be based at the offices of Manushya Foundation, in Bangkok, Thailand, and would primarily support and be responsible for implementing the strategy of Manushya Foundation:

  • Conduct research on business and human rights issues in Thailand;

  • Write accurate, unbiased, comprehensive, and timely reports and other research documents (often including images, audio, video, data analysis, and/or online tools) that include policy recommendations intended to contribute to ending violations by businesses on human rights;

  • Development of infographics and social media around business and human rights issues and cases;

  • Provision of support on advocacy around business and human rights cases;

  • Support administrative aspects leading up to consultations and workshops including collaborating with regional and national partners on the agenda and organisation of meetings, among other administrative tasks;

  • Assist in any other relevant tasks as assigned by the supervisor.

Finally, s/he will be deeply involved in the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights on the ground and experience first-hand insight into the work and functioning of a small NGO.

 

Profile needed

 

  • Degree in international law, human rights, international development, or any related field;

  • Interest in international human rights mechanisms and the United Nations system;

  • Ability to develop accurate, compelling research outputs on business and human rights issues;

  • Ability to develop research aimed at a range of audiences;

  • Strong analytical skills and dedication;

  • Very good command of oral and written English;

  • Experience working on business and human rights issues is a strong asset.

 

Internship conditions

 

The internship can be an online or in person internship, and it is full time for a period of four to six months between June and November 2020. The internship is not paid. However, the internship can develop into a volunteer position, which would be remunerated.

In addition, interns will get first-hand experience working with communities on the ground, to gather data and information. All costs incurred during these field visits will be covered by Manushya Foundation for the duration of the internship.
