On 21 January 2026, four Thammasat University students were summoned by police for allegations of violating Section 112 and the Computer Crime Act. Their alleged “crime”? Holding a political satire banner on their own university campus.
This case stems from a Facebook post by the Independent Political Satire Group of Thammasat University, showing banners expressing opinions on the monarchy. Authorities claim the banners constituted lèse-majesté because they allegedly coincided with a royal funeral procession.
Let’s call this what it is: ⚠️ Section 112 is weaponised once again to criminalise expression, intimidate student activists, and silence youth-led dissent. A warning shot to young people who dare to think critically and publicly.
✊🏽 Manushya Foundations stands in solidarity with the Thammasat students and all youth human rights defenders. We reject the repression of student activism. We refuse a future where young people are punished for thinking critically.
Youth voices are not the danger.
Authoritarian laws are.
#Abolish112! Criticizing authoritarianism is not a crime! Freedom of expression is not a crime!
