On 6 July, peaceful protesters were met with police violence in Chiang Mai, as they called out toxic run-off from Chinese-backed mining operations in Myanmar.

Members of the People's Network for the Protection of the Kok, Sai, Ruak, and Mekong Rivers gathered to deliver a letter to Chinese President Xi Jinping, demanding accountability for transboundary pollution destroying Northern Thailand’s rivers and the livelihoods of more than 70,000 households.
But before they could reach the Chinese Consulate, over 150 police officers blocked them. The clash turned violent, leaving at least two protesters injured, including one with a broken arm.
For months, communities across Northern Thailand have sounded the alarm. ⚠️ Yet their demands on deaf ears. Instead of protection and remedy, communities are met with government with government inaction, underfunding, and now police violence.
👎 Thailand’s proposed 2027 budget offers only limited funding for water monitoring, with no meaningful resources for river restoration or remedies for affected communities.
Once again, the state bends to foreign corporate interests while communities defending their lands and rivers are left to pay the price.
✊🏽 We stand with river defender communities! We demand that the Thai and Chinese governments address the environmental harms caused by cross-border mining. We call for immediate independent investigations and corporate accountability for overseas mining investments.
No protest and demand for environmental justice should ever be met with violence. 𝘾𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨-𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙥𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙙𝙚𝙢𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙘𝙧𝙤𝙨𝙨-𝙗𝙤𝙧𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮!
