Justice is served best when it reflects the diversity of the people it protects. On this day, we pay tribute to the defiance, intellect, and glass ceilings shattered by women who dared to lead the bench.
In Southeast Asia, these three women icons redefined the law:

🇵🇭 Cecilia Muñoz-Palma (Philippines): A true pioneer as the first woman appointed as Judge to the Supreme Court of the Philippines. She stood as a beacon of democracy and became one of the leading opposition figures that helped topple Martial Law of the late dictator Former President Ferdinand Marcos.

🇹🇭 Metinee Chalodhorn (Thailand): The historic first female President of the Supreme Court of Thailand. Under her leadership, she focused on improving the criminal justice system and actively advanced the implementation of the Bangkok Rules to improve treatment and custody of women prisoners.

🇲🇾 Tun Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat (Malaysia): Malaysia’s first female Chief Justice. A symbol of judicial independence and uncompromising integrity, she steered the judiciary during the COVID-19 pandemic and defended judges involved in high-profile cases and criminal trials involving politicians from intimidation.

Rule of law and the judiciary system are the cornerstone of democracy, freedom, and equality, but they have not always been in favor of addressing various forms of gender-based violence and systemic misogyny. Increased representation of women judges is needed to guarantee our legal system works for everyone.
🔥 To every woman in the legal profession: Your voice is the gavel, and your courage is the law.
