The Phichit villagers faced toxic contamination, corporate intimidation and a decade-long legal battle against the country’s largest gold mine. They refused to back down. And they won.

🌾 Phichit women cared for the sick, defended their livelihoods, gathered evidence and organised their communities to confront the harms of the Chatree Gold Mine. Even as villagers faced intimidation and lawsuits designed to silence them, they kept demanding accountability.

⚖️ On 24 March 2026, that resistance helped secure a landmark victory in Thailand’s first environmental class action lawsuit. The court ordered Akara Resources to compensate nearly 400 villagers, rehabilitate contaminated land and water, and close one of the mine’s waste storage facilities.

This victory belongs to the communities who refused to let corporate power have the final word.

But a judgment cannot undo decades of harm. The compensation falls short. The struggle for full remedy continues.

Manushya has stood alongside the communities as their international human rights counsel since 2019. We stand with them still.

🔥 This International Day of Rural Women, we celebrate the women who turn collective resistance into corporate accountability. Rural women’s land, health and futures are never expendable.
