For more than 20 years, Phichit villagers, in Central Thailand, have been fighting for justice against the Chatree Gold Mine’s pollution and human rights violations. They filed petitions, joined public hearings, brought class action lawsuits yet justice has never been delivered.
When the mine reopened in 2023, despite all the evidence of contamination and harm, the villagers’ pain was ignored once again.
That’s why, on 19 July 2024, Manushya Foundation and Phichit villagers took their fight to the United Nations, submitting a formal complaint to 13 UN Special Procedures, exposing human rights violations and calling for truth, accountability, and effective remedy.
In response, 9 UN Experts issued an official UN Communications to hold responsible companies and governments accountable for the severe harms caused to the Phichit villagers. On 14 January 2025, they wrote to Akara, Kingsgate, the Governments of Thailand and Australia, and implicated companies, demanding investigations and real justice.
As Decolonial Intersectional Feminists, we at Manushya Foundation have long been supporting the Phichit community in their fight against corporate impunity, ensuring their voices are heard, and justice is given!
