⚠️ 𝘿𝙄𝙂𝙄𝙏𝘼𝙇 𝙍𝙄𝙂𝙃𝙏𝙎 𝘼𝙇𝙀𝙍𝙏! ⚠️ Meta just ditched the @-mention feature of AI tool Muse Image, but only as its PR crisis demanded

Meta rolled out Muse Image, one of its features allows strangers to generate images from people's public Instagram photos by simply @-mentioning their public Instagram accounts, with the burden placed on the user to opt out.

Meta backed down on 10 July, but only on this one specific feature as a form of PR damage control whilst Muse Image itself is still rolling out and is very much alive across Meta AI. Meta did not indicate whether it will be reintroduced again in the future, but nothing really stops this exact same violation from resurfacing again in the future given Meta’s history of leaning too much on profit.

The real demand must be opt-in, not opt-out, as a non-negotiable standard for any feature touching a person's likeness. There needs to be real consequences, actual teeth, when companies ignore it. Though we have been arguing that this shouldn’t exist at all.

Sorry, we heard the feedback is not a policy, but a PR campaign and a hostage negotiation tactic.

We should stop accepting that as an apology and demand more, wayyyy more from a company that deliberately destroys our freedom of thought, democracy and dreams of liberation.
