⚖️ Earlier today, in an appalling step backwards for human rights and judicial independence, the South Bangkok Criminal Court ruled Bai’s months-long detention “lawful.” His extradition hearing is now scheduled for 25 January 2027.

Calling Bai’s detention lawful does not make it just. Bai is not a foreign national caught in bureaucratic limbo. He is a recognised refugee and journalist whose only “offence” was exposing corruption and telling the truth.

By keeping him behind bars while Beijing pursues him across borders, Thailand’s judiciary risks becoming an active instrument in China’s expanding machinery of transnational repression.

✈️ Bai should already be safe. A third country accepted him for resettlement, yet Thailand blocked his departure twice. Now, Thailand’s legal system is keeping him within Beijing’s reach.

⚠️ If returned, Bai faces political persecution, arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance and torture. Thailand’s own Anti-Torture Law prohibits sending him into such danger.

As Manushya Foundation’s Founder and Executive Director Emilie Palamy Pradichit contends: 💬 “If Thailand wishes to preserve its standing in the global community, maintain the integrity of its legal system, and escape labels of being a puppet to China’s transnational repression, Thai authorities must guarantee Bai’s resettlement without delay.”

📢 Release Bai. Halt the extradition. Let him reach safety.

Every step towards handing Bai to China only deepens Thailand’s complicity in transnational repression.
