When Disaster Strikes, Abortion Access Can’t Wait #InternationalSafeAbortionDay

This year’s theme, “Solidarity in Action: Advance Reproductive Justice and Urgently Strengthen Health Systems for Comprehensive Abortion Care," calls for turning solidarity into action. This post was lovingly made in collaboration with Tamtang Foundation (@Tamtang_group).

This day brings together people and sectors across society to advance sexual and reproductive health and justice, while strengthening health systems so that safe, quality, and accessible abortion care is available to everyone as a basic health service and a right that is free from discrimination and stigma.

As the flooding in Bangkok begins to ease, many other areas are still facing crisis. During a flood, we do everything we can to reduce its impact: stocking up on food, preparing sandbags, finding boats to seek help, and moving family members who may be particularly vulnerable to safer areas.

But in situations like these, people seeking an abortion can face additional barriers.

Abortion services are already limited in many areas. During a flood, some healthcare facilities providing abortion care may have to close temporarily. Services that provide medication through delivery may also face delays or interruptions, making it difficult for people to receive their medication on time and potentially requiring them to rethink their plans for taking it.

At a time when we are sending support to people affected by flooding and those dealing with its aftermath, we must also remember those who need abortion care.

They deserve support — not only through solidarity and understanding, but also through services that remain accessible throughout times of crisis. Abortion care should be available without unnecessary barriers, prejudice or discrimination, regardless of the circumstances.

We also want to recognise and thank the healthcare providers and abortion care workers who continue to provide these essential services, while supporting one another to ensure that people seeking to end a pregnancy can make decisions about their own bodies and lives.

And whatever happens, everyone deserves to know that their future is still theirs to shape.
