Khieo Lapchanh, a 26-year-old Lao political activist, has been missing in Thailand since 15 September 2026.
Before disappearing, Khieo faced relentless digital transnational repression for speaking out on political and social issues in Laos. He was doxxed, targeted with AI-manipulated content, threatened with forced return, and subjected to death threats, including a USD 8,000 bounty on his life. Fearing for his safety, he had already been forced into silence.
๐ Last Seen:ย ~2:00 AM on 15 September, after finishing his shift at a restaurant in Samut Sakhon. CCTV reviewed by Thai police confirms he never returned home.
๐บ๐ณ The Next Day:ย Khieo was scheduled for his long-awaited first registration interview with UNHCR Thailand. He had written his testimony with Manushyaโs support, and prepared evidence of the threats against him to seek international protection.

As Manushyaโs Founder & Executive Director Emilie Palamy Pradichit warns, โDigital transnational repression does not stay confined to the digital space. It can expose activists to physical dangerโฆ We do not yet know what happened to Khieo. But the possibility that digital repression escalated into physical transnational repression must be urgently and thoroughly investigated.โ
We refuse to allow his disappearance to be met with silence. โ
