#WorldPopulationDay 🌏More and more SEAblings are opting out of parenthood, 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘦 𝘣𝘭𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘮?

Across Southeast Asia, governments are sounding the alarm over declining birth rates and an impending “demographic crisis”. But let’s not pretend the crisis is that young people are having fewer children.

Just look at the world they’ve inherited: climate collapse, rising authoritarianism, unaffordable housing, stagnant wages, unpaid care burdens, and deepening inequality.

⚠️ 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗼𝘄𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀. They are owed climate justice, gender equality, decent work, affordable housing, universal social protection. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗱 𝗮 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻.

✊ On this World Population Day, stop asking why young people are having fewer children. Start asking why our political and economic systems continue to make raising children feel impossible.
