We are witnessing the genocide in Palestine. The Rohingya people are enduring decades of statelessness and ethnic cleansing. SudanĀ is facing massacres in silence. CongoĀ continues to suffer under extractive violence rooted in enduring colonial legacies.
But letās remember that rights continue to live, not through states, but through Human Rights Defenders (HRDs)Ā who risk everything to speak truth to power āš½
This #HumanRightsDay, we expose the rising authoritarianism and shrinking civic space in Southeast Asia.
In our September 2025 submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders (Mary Lawlor), Manushya Foundation revealed how HRDs in Laos & Thailand are criminalised, harassed, and even targeted across borders simply for daring to speak šā ļø







We urge the international community to press Laos & Thailand to:
ā Formally recognise HRDs & adopt gender-sensitive protections
ā Investigate & prosecute attacks against HRDs & WHRDs
ā Repeal repressive cyber laws
ā End all forms of transnational repression

But repression cannot crush the movement, as long as we protect the defenders who protect our democracy.
