#WhatsHappeningInThailand 🚨 She once held the record for the harshest lèse-majesté sentence in Thailand! After more than 8 years behind bars, Anchan is finally free. But Section 112 continues to destroy lives.

#Abolish112 🚨 After more than 8 years, 4 months, and 19 days behind bars, Anchan Preelerd, a 69-year-old former government official, finally walked free. Arrested in January 2015 and accused of sharing online clips deemed defamatory to the monarchy, she became a symbol of Thailand’s digital dictatorship, punished simply for exercising her freedom of expression.

⚖️ In 2021, Anchan received one of the longest prison sentences ever recorded under Section 112: 87 years, reduced to 43 years and 6 months after her guilty plea. For years, her case marked the harshest punishment in Thailand’s lèse-majesté history; until 2024, when activist Mongkhon Thirakot was sentenced to 50 years.

🚫 During her imprisonment, Anchan was denied bail repeatedly, dismissed from her government position, and stripped of her pension despite nearly 40 years of service. Even outside prison walls, her struggle continues as she fights for her dignity, rights, and survival.

📢 Her release yesterday, August 27, 2025, was only possible thanks to a Royal Amnesty Decree. But freedom for one does not mean justice for all. Countless others remain unjustly detained under Section 112.

✊ As decolonial intersectional feminists, we at Manushya know that laws like Section 112 are not about justice or protection; they are tools of oppression designed to silence dissent, control narratives, and erase voices. They are part of the wider system of authoritarianism and digital dictatorship that criminalizes truth-tellers and attacks fundamental freedoms.

✊ Until Section 112 is abolished, there can be no real freedom of expression, dignity, or democracy in Thailand. Anchan’s story is a reminder of the human cost of unjust laws. We must continue to demand justice, dignity, and freedom for all political prisoners in Thailand.

We stand with Anchan. We stand with them all. ✊
