🔎 All Eyes on the Supreme Court: A critical moment for democracy and freedom of expression

⚠️ Thailand’s National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) is moving forward with an ethics case against 44 former Move Forward MPs (now People’s Party), in connection with their past sponsorship of a proposal to amend Article 112 of the Criminal Code (Lèse-Majesté). [This is an ongoing case]

If the case proceeds to the Supreme Court and is accepted, those accused could face severe political consequences, including:

   ‣ Immediate removal from office

   ‣ A lifetime ban on the right to run for election

   ‣ Permanent loss of the right to hold any political position

Until a verdict is reached, multiple opposition lawmakers will be barred from holding office. This action and its questionable timing, right after Thailand held its national elections, raise serious concerns about the shrinking space for political participation and policy reform efforts in the country.

✊ Why should we care?

The implications extend beyond partisan actors. Human rights defenders, activists, and community voices affected by Article 112 cases have long faced severe consequences.

With the Constitutional Referendum winning “Yes” by a landslide, developments like this case intensify concerns about genuine reform and tell a warning message to lawmakers and democracy defenders who dare to challenge repressive laws: Anyone who touches Article 112 will face heavy persecution and political suicide.

👁️ We are closely monitoring this case as a test of democratic space and political rights.
