#RememberSlavery ⛓️ On the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition, we reflect on how the United States’ 13th Amendment’s loophole perpetuates a legacy of exploitation.

The legal exception embedded in the 13th Amendment allows slavery to persist under the guise of "punishment for crime," fueling the prison-industrial complex and disproportionately targeting Black and Brown communities.

🔗 From convict leasing in the post-Civil War South to the War on Drugs and beyond, this loophole has been weaponised to maintain racial and economic oppression.

🌐 Around the world, forced labour persists in penal systems, from Brazil to China. The day reminds us that this issue is global and demands global action. Let’s close this loophole and honour the memory of those who fought against slavery by fighting for true freedom today. ✊🏽
