On 29 April 2023, Anousa “Jack” Luangsuphom, a young Lao democracy activist speaking truth to power through online platforms like Power by Keyboard (āš‚āšąāššāŧ€āš„āš·āŧˆāšāš™āš”āŧ‰āš§āšāš„āšĩāššāšāš”) ðŸ“ą, was shot in the mouth and chest at point-blank range in a Vientiane cafÃĐ.

Three years later, Lao authorities still deflect and hide behind convenient stories of “romantic” or “business” conflicts, while suspects walk free and no one has been held accountable. ⚖ïļâŒ

Let us be clear: this was not an isolated attack. It is part of a wider architecture of fear used to silence state critics, inside Laos and beyond its borders. From Jack’s attempted murder to the suspicious death of online critic Mr. Khaen, Lao activists (even while seeking refuge in Thailand and other countries) remain unsafe while impunity reigns.

🇚ðŸ‡ģ Following Laos’ 4th UPR cycle, the UN made recommendations directly relevant to Jack’s case: protect human rights defenders, investigate attacks, and end intimidation, harassment, and reprisals. Yet Laos continues to choose silence over justice.

✊ We at Manushya and Manushya Lao have called for Justice for Jack since Day 1. Join us and don’t let his courage be erased! Don’t let the Lao regime bury his story!

If they can shoot Jack and get away with it, no activist in Laos is safe. None of us are.
