Early this week, #Thailand took a key step as part of its accession process to the #OECD, by submitting a self-assessment report and analysing compliance of Thai laws with OECD standards.

While Thailand portrays itself as a champion on responsible business conduct, we know too well the reality: exploited migrant workers, Indigenous Peoples evicted from their lands, rural communities suffering health issues and environmental contamination like the Phichit Villagers, human rights defenders criminalised. And no justice, no accountability.

Thailand can no longer put profit over people and the planet. The world is watching!

We call on:

➡️ Thailand to ensure meaningful consultation of rightsholders as part of the development of the Responsible Business Conduct Bill as well as any other laws.

➡️ Thailand to amend the Responsible Business Conduct Bill to incorporate the recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ right to FPIC, adopt a gender-sensitive approach and deterrent penalties in case of non-compliance and violations - including civil and criminal liability

➡️ The OECD to remind Thailand of its duty to ensure effective consultation and participation and transparency.

These echo our call for stronger right-based standards on corporate accountability and climate justice we made at the OECD last October; in particular the importance of recognising FPIC as part of Just Transition.

The voices and realities of the People must be at the center of policy developments - not elite people in black suits! Until the government protects its People and the Planet and holds companies accountable - Thailand is NOT ready for the OECD!
