Do you know what happens if you have an unwanted abortion in Thailand?
📍 On 7 February 2021, Thailand finally allowed abortion to be legal under 12 weeks of pregnancy. However, seeking an abortion after 12 weeks of unwanted pregnancy is still a crime!
Although the amendments to the criminal law appear to be more “lenient”, there are still many challenges that people with an unwanted pregnancy have to face in order to access a safe abortion in Thailand!
🛑 For example, the lack of safe abortion facilities (especially in rural areas), travel limitations due to COVID-19, financial barriers, inaccessibility of abortion pills, etc.
🚫 BUT the worse is the social and religious stigma around abortion!! Old public morals destroying the lives of people with an unwanted pregnancy!
⚠️ Because many people still believe that abortion equates to murder, a lot of medical practitioners still refuse to perform or promote #SafeAbortion. This leads people who had undergone or are considering abortion to feel guilty, sinful and further discourage them from reaching out for help!
#MyBodyMyChoice ✊ Human rights are the right to one’s life and the freedom from discrimination, violence, and any inhumane actions. To force someone into carrying an unwanted pregnancy or having a dangerous abortion is to violate one’s human rights as it gravely impacts an individual’s mental and physical wellbeing!
At Manushya Foundation, we worked with our community partners on 24 different themes to tell the world about #WhatsHappeningInThailand. We collaborated with @tamtang_group to tell you the truth behind #abortion in Thailand, and to denounce & pressure the Thai government to do better!
