🚨 #DecolonizeNow 📢 No Gender Justice Without Development Justice! 🌿
We’re proud to share our latest input to the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Development: “Gender Inequality in Climate Action and Development: Examples from Thailand and Laos” — in response to the 2025 call for input on the “Nexus Between Gender Equality and the Right to Development”.
Across 🇹🇭 Thailand and 🇱🇦 Laos, Indigenous, rural, and ethnic minority women are on the frontlines of the climate crisis—but excluded from the policies meant to address it.
From forest conservation that criminalises villagers to hydropower dams that displace communities, these so-called “solutions” are causing real harm.
They promise development.
But women defenders are being silenced, displaced, and erased.
📌🇹🇭 In Thailand, Indigenous Karen women at Bang Kloi and Isaan ethnic women at Sab Wai face eviction under false climate policies that ignore gender and Indigenous rights.
📌🇱🇦 In Laos, hydropower projects like Luang Prabang dam are displacing 500+ families and threatening a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
📌 Both countries deny legal recognition of Indigenous Peoples—erasing identities and stripping land, culture, and self-determined development.
📌 Women human rights defenders face SLAPPs, surveillance, and intimidation for defending land, rights, and justice.
✊ We call for:
🌱 Secure land rights and fair compensation for Indigenous and rural women
🚫 A halt to harmful projects until gender-just, community-led assessments are done
🧭 Legal recognition of Indigenous Peoples and their collective rights
🛡️ Strong anti-SLAPP laws and protections for women human rights defenders
