#DigitalRights: Minister admits Pegasus Spyware used by Thailand for 'National Security' purposes

⚠️ เมื่อวานนี้ (19 ก.ค.) ชัยวุฒิ ธนาคมานุสรณ์ รัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงดิจิทัลเพื่อเศรษฐกิจและสังคม (ดีอีเอส) ยอมรับระหว่างการอภิปรายไม่ไว้วางใจของสภาฯ ว่า มีหน่วยงานของรัฐบาลไทยที่ใช้สปายแวร์จริง โดยเป็นการใช้เพื่อ "รักษาความมั่นคงของชาติ" และปราบปรามยาเสพติดเท่านั้น

ก่อนหน้าที่รัฐบาลจะออกมายอมรับในเรื่องนี้ iLaw และ Citizen Lab ได้เปิดเผยผลการศึกษาเมื่อวันที่ 18 ก.ค. ที่ผ่านมาว่า โทรศัพท์มือถือของนักเคลื่อนไหวเพื่อประชาธิปไตยกว่า 30 คนถูกโจมตีโดยสปายแวร์ชื่อเพกาซัส ซึ่งเมื่อเจาะสำเร็จแล้ว สปายแวร์ตัวนี้จะสามารถล้วงข้อมูลส่วนตัว เช่น รูปภาพและสถานที่ หรือควบคุมโทรศัพท์จากทางไกลโดยที่เจ้าของไม่รู้ตัวอีกด้วย

รัฐบาลไทยถูกตั้งข้อสงสัยว่าใช้สปายแวร์สอดแนมประชาชนตั้งแต่เดือนพฤศจิกายนปี 2564 เมื่อนักกิจกรรมที่เป็นเหยื่อการโจมตีได้รับแจ้งเตือนจากบริษัท Apple ว่า โทรศัพท์ของพวกเขาอาจกำลังโดนแทรกแซงโดย “การโจมตีที่ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากภาครัฐ” โดยเพกาซัสเป็นเพียงหนึ่งในหลากหลายวิธีที่รัฐบาลใช้เพื่อพยายามปิดปากนักต่อสู้เพื่อประชาธิปไตย ซึ่งเป็นการละเมิดสิทธิเสรีภาพในการแสดงออกและสิทธิในความเป็นส่วนตัวอย่างชัดเจน!

⚠️ Minister for Digital Economy and Society Chaiwut Thanakamanusorn admitted during the no-confidence debate on Tuesday, 19 July, that some Thai government departments have been using Pegasus spyware for "national security" and to combat drug trafficking.

"I know that [Pegasus] exists," says the Minister, "as far as I know, it is used for national security or drug trafficking purposes."

This admission came after reports by iLaw and Citizen Lab revealed earlier this week that Pegasus spyware had been weaponized against at least 30 pro-democracy activists. Once installed, Pegasus can collect personal information, including photos and location details, stored on a device. It also allows the device to be controlled remotely.

The Thai government's involvement in the Pegasus scandal goes back to November 2021, when activist victims of the spyware were first notified by Apple of possible "State-sponsored attackers" infiltrating their devices. The spyware is just one of many methods employed to silence those who are fighting for true democracy, in direct violation of the people's right to free speech and privacy.
