We need the legally #BindingTreaty ensuring companies conduct mandatory human rights due diligence!

#CorporateAccountability #AsiaWakeUp📍 We need the legally #BindingTreaty ensuring that companies conduct mandatory human rights due diligence!

In 2011, the UN Human Rights Council adopted the UNGPs, UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, voluntary guidelines to hold companies responsible and prevent their negative human rights and environmental impacts.

However, voluntary standards such as the UNGPs and National Action Plans didn’t do anything to bring about corporate accountability in Asia. THEY ARE NOT ENOUGH!

In their pursuit of huge profits, Big Business always gets away with exploiting People and the Planet. The effects can be devastating for communities around the world, exploiting those marginalized and oppressed to gain the maximum profit. In the meantime, the Planet is persistently POLLUTED from the company's expanding projects which push its limits to the edge. However, those who defy them and speak their truth to power are silenced, threatened, and killed.

While corporations operate across borders, laws are still primarily nationally based. To date, there is almost no legally binding international regulation of corporations. Nearly all attempts to hold corporations to account at an international level have been voluntary and therefore unenforceable.

For years, our network has been lobbying for a global legally #BindingTreaty on Business and Human Rights. We need to make companies responsible for their human rights and environmental abuses!

We are here to denounce strong and loud that voluntary measures such as the UNGPs and NAPs are not enough. We need the legally #BindingTreaty and mandatory human rights due diligence! ✊
