We want a #JustTransition Now in Laos! ☘️🌏 #AttapeuDamCollapse 🇱🇦 Seven years ago today, the Xe Pian–Xe Namnoy dam collapsed in Attapeu Province, Laos—killing 71 people, displacing over 7,000, and wiping entire communities off the map.
This was not a natural disaster. It was man-made. It was a preventable failure caused by corporate negligence, weak regulation, and the silencing of local voices.
Seven years on, survivors are still waiting for justice. Most were relocated to poorly built homes on infertile land, with no livelihoods and no meaningful compensation. The dam’s developer, SK Ecoplant, continues to deny responsibility.
📣 At Manushya Foundation we continue to advocate alongside survivors. Following our Complaint and Submissions exposing corruption to the United Nations, Lao authorities were forced to admit in 2024 that $4.2 million in compensation funds had gone missing.
And in 2025, a Radio Free Asia investigation revealed that 23 officials were disciplined for embezzling those funds—but most received only light punishment. Justice remains out of reach.
❌ Meanwhile, those who speak out—like Joseph Akaravong —have faced exile, imprisonment, and violence. Their courage continues to expose the truth.
#PeopleOverProfit ✊🏽 At Manushya Foundation we continue to stand in solidarity with survivors and human rights defenders. We call for transparency, corporate accountability, and immediate reforms to ensure accountability and protect communities.
The struggle is not over. Justice must not take another year.
