#EqualPayDay: It’s 2023, and yet the gender pay gap persists!

📍Today, we observe International #EqualPayDay, a day that continues to shed light on the stark wage disparity between men and women. Despite the long-standing struggle for women's rights, they still face inequalities in various aspects of life, including their earnings.

📉 In Thailand, women were reported to earn over 10% less than their male counterparts for the same job, as per UN Women's 2020 data, with progress towards parity stagnating in the region over the past decade, according to the World Economic Forum 2023 report. This issue is deeply tied to gender roles expectations and intersectional discriminatory gender stereotypes. Employers often harbor the belief that women's roles as mothers or caregivers might distract them from their professional responsibilities, putting women at an immediate disadvantage, pressured to both fulfill the role of principal caregiver at home and endure workplace discrimination.

📌 What needs to resonate loud and clear: when women and men perform identical roles, there is no justification for unequal pay! Reduced income can lead to a diminished quality of life, and it's unjust for women to bear this burden solely because of their gender.

To effectively address and resolve the gender pay gap, we must approach it from an intersectional feminist perspective. This means recognizing that gender inequality is intertwined with various other forms of discrimination, such as racial bias, discrimination based on gender identity and sexuality, and ableism.

At Manushya Foundation, we believe that achieving true gender justice equals dismantling ALL the systemic barriers that perpetuate these inequalities!

#WeAreManushyan ♾ Equal Human Beings

✊🏻 On International Equal Pay Day 2023, we call upon businesses and governments to take accountability and eradicate pay discrimination from workplaces. It's high time we eliminate gender roles and stereotypes from society, both in the professional sphere and beyond.
