#Songkran2025💧 Though Songkran is known by many members of our international community as a nationwide 'water fight’ - it is so much more than that! Songkran is Thai New Year, and is observed for a week every April, with Songkran day held on 13th April. Similar celebrations are held in many other nations as well, including Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka.

🪷 The significance of ‘water’ in the Songkran holiday is important. The holiday overall is associated with ‘rebirth,’ new beginnings, healing, cleansing, and respect for our human and non-human relatives. These are all attributes that one might associate with water itself.

❤️‍🩹 We love to see people out on the streets having fun splashing each other with water during Songkran! That being said, as an intersectional feminist organisation that cares about community healing, climate justice, and working to shift narratives away from the capitalist and colonial imagination, we want to validate those who really want to embrace the core values of Songkran, focusing on spiritual growth, faith, community values, and love for the environment.

🕊️ So, here are 4 ways our team will be celebrating this Songkran! Though water fights are fun, we also want to remind our community that we are experiencing one of the hottest seasons in many of our lifetimes, going through a climate crisis, and also aware that millions of people across the world are food- and water-insecure. We do not want to rain on anyone’s parade, but we also want to encourage all to be mindful of saving water and resources wherever you can this Songkran.

🧘🏻‍♀️ Not only is saving, embracing, and respecting water important for ourselves, our relatives, and the environment - it also reflects the true meaning of Songkran, which is rooted in introspection, rebirth, and cleansing.

😴 Enjoy your Songkran, don’t forget to save water, take care of yourself and your loved ones, and all the rest! That’s what we will be doing. ~
