Writer: Manushya FoundationManushya Foundation

As we mark International Women’s Day, Manushya is celebrating 'PIM' TANRUTHAI THANRUT as our #IWD2025 Woman of Courage! ✨

📢 "Democracy is not just about one person; it belongs to all of us." — Pim Tanruthai Thanrut

Who is Pim? A fearless feminist. A youth leader. A voice of defiance against oppression.

'PIM' TANRUTHAI THANRUT is a feminist leader from the Mokluangrimnam youth-led democracy group. She is one of the most outspoken young women fighting for democracy, justice, and human rights in Thailand. Pim refuses to stay silent despite harassment, lawsuits, and state violence aimed at crushing dissent.

🚨 What Happened to Pim?

Targeted for speaking out. On March 4, 2025, the court delivered its verdict against Pim, originally scheduled as the first witness hearing. Instead, Pim changed her plea to guilty, leading the court to immediately issue its judgment.

⚖️ The Charges: Pim was convicted under Section 112 (lèse-majesté) of the Thai Criminal Code for delivering a speech at the 'Respect My Vote' protest on July 14, 2023, in front of the Bangkok Art and Culture Center. Pim's speech was calling on senators and members of parliament to respect the people's voice in the vote for the 30th prime minister.

⚖️ Court’s Decision:🔻 Found guilty and sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison.🔻 Sentence suspended for 2 years due to this being her first imprisonment sentence.🔻 Placed on probation for 1 year.

🔻 Required to report to a probation officer four times.

🔻 Ordered to complete 24 hours of community service.

Section 112 is a tool of state repression, criminalizing freedom of speech and punishing those who dare to challenge power. Many activists, like Pim, have endured:

🔻 Denied bail & lengthy pre-trial detention

🔻 Constant surveillance, intimidation, and harassment

🔻 Hunger strikes and extreme measures to demand justice.

💬 "Political cases are the most devastating form of legal repression. They ruin lives simply for holding different political views. That’s why Section 112 and all legal loopholes enabling political persecution must be reformed." — Pim Tanruthai Thanrut

💜 🌍 International Women’s Day: When Women’s Struggle is Everyone’s Struggle

March 8 is more than a celebration—it’s a call to action. Women have always been at the heart of political resistance, fighting for labor rights, freedom of expression, and political participation. In Thailand, the fight for democracy is inseparable from the fight for women’s rights.

Under authoritarian rule, women and dissidents are among the first to be oppressed—but they are also among the first to rise!

🔥 Women in Political Movements: A Legacy of Resistance

From the October 14, 1973, student protests to the May 1992 uprising, to today’s youth-led democracy movement—women have shaped Thai history.

Pim is part of this legacy. She represents the new generation of feminists and activists who refuse to be silenced, standing on the frontlines of Thailand’s fight for freedom. Despite state repression, lawsuits, and threats, she continues to challenge power, defend human rights, and demand a Thailand where democracy belongs to everyone.

Pim’s Fight for Democracy & Women’s Rights: Why It Matters

💥 Defying Oppression – Pim dares to question and resist authoritarian power that suppresses citizens' rights.💥 Demanding Women's Political Participation – She insists that women’s voices must shape democracy and that justice must be intersectional.💥 Resisting State Violence – Despite harassment, intimidation, and legal persecution, she refuses to back down—becoming a symbol of resilience for Thailand’s youth.

Women and Democracy: Inseparable Struggles

The fight for democracy is also the fight for:✨ Women’s rights✨ LGBTQ+ rights✨ Labor rights✨ Community rights

🔥💜 On International Women’s Day, we must recognize that women’s fight for democracy is not just a women’s issue—it is a fight for all of us. Because when democracy thrives, women's rights will flourish too.
