#NewYearResolution 💸 Donate to #FreeMuay from Jail in Laos!




💫 To kick off 2022 right, Make a new year's donation to support Muay, a courageous Lao Environmental Human Rights Defender, unfairly and arbitrarily detained in Laos for speaking truth to power by denouncing corruption and human rights violations in the hands of the government and corporations!! 🚨Today will be her 841st day in jail. Your contribution will support Muay's survival in jail in Laos and sustain her family's livelihood. By being unfairly jailed, Muay can no longer sustain her 5-year old daughter and parents.


💪🏻 Uncovering the wrongdoings of the business activities and corruption in Laos, Ms. Houayheuang Xayabouly or Muay stood up for the rights of the Lao people by:


🗣 calling out the corruption in educational and governmental systems

🗣 highlighting how Laos’ land had been grabbed and given to Chinese investments!

🗣 highlighting how indigenous peoples were coerced to work under harsh conditions on Chinese-owned banana plantations

🗣 condemning the slow and ineffective responses of the Lao government in aiding the local community after a dam collapse in 2018 and flooding in 2019!


✊🏻 By defending the rights of the Lao people through her activism, Muay has become a target of the Lao government. She was arrested in September 2019, and sentenced to 5 years in prison, and fined 20 million Kip in November 2019, further charged with criminal defamation and anti-state propaganda.


📍 In March 2020, Manushya Foundation submitted a complaint to the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights defenders, and in July 2020, UN Human Rights experts sent a joint allegation letter to the Lao government asking them the #FreeMuay as Muay did not violate international human rights law by speaking truth to power! But the Lao government refused.


📍 In December 2020, Manushya Foundation submitted a new complaint to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention and Muay’s case was consequently deemed arbitrary detention! The UN Experts have also called for her immediate release! #FreeMuay
