Let’s celebrate Intersex Awareness Day 2022!

🟡🟣🌈Let’s celebrate Intersex Awareness Day 2022!

🏳️‍🌈 Today, 26 October, marks Intersex Awareness Day, a day for highlighting the pressing human rights issues that intersex people around the world are facing.

🧬 Despite intersex traits being quite prevalent, an estimate of 1.7% globally, intersex children all over the world are still being subject to non-consensual, unnecessary, and dangerous procedures to “correct” their physical traits without their consent.

🩺 Many intersex children grow up without any knowledge of their identity. The lack of awareness may lead to severe mental suffering, not to mention the life-long physical impact from the irreversible “treatment”, such as scarring, loss of sexual sensation, and infertility.

📢 “[Sterilization, hormone therapy and genital-normalizing surgeries] are rarely medically necessary…and have also been criticized as being unscientific, potentially harmful and contributing to stigma,” said Juan E. Méndez, former UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, in 2013, along with a call for all countries to outlaw such procedures being performed on intersex persons without consent.

♀♂ Intersex people are suffering only because society feels the need to put them into “male” and “female” boxes, when in reality, sexes and genders can never be limited to only two. It’s necessary that we value intersex people’s autonomy to make decisions about their bodies when they are old enough to give informed consent.

#WeAreManushyan ♾ Equal Human Beings

✊🏻 Manushya Foundation will always stand in solidarity with intersex people and fight the harm that is a result of the rigid gender binary dogma. Only when we respect and protect diversity, we can achieve peace, security, and well-being of all humans. You can start helping today by sharing this post to raise awareness on intersexuality!
