Nine Years Since the Military Staged a Coup in 2014!

🛑 Nine years ago, Prayut Chan-o-cha staged a military coup d’état against the democratically elected government and seized power. The Thai people have had to live under a military junta since May 22, 2014. Later in 2019, Prayut was undemocratically elected as a Prime Minister using his power to design a new election system that favors him!


Since then, Thailand has undergone a drastic shrinking of basic human rights in both online and offline spaces. The military-backed government has further restricted the right to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, freedom of association, and much more by weaponizing cyber laws and Section 112, and by cracking down on the pro-democracy movement to silence anyone from speaking truth to power. Not only this, but the Prayut government has also undermined local communities’ rights by promoting businesses and profits over people and the planet.


On May 14, 2023, Thailand held its second general election since the coup, and the first since the pro-democracy movement has started. Thai people spoke and expressed their desire for a new, democratic government. However, the fight for democracy is far from over. Although the military lost the election, it is trying to hold onto power by hindering the new government formation progress at every juncture.

วันนี้ (22 พ.ค.) เมื่อ 9 ปีที่แล้ว พลเอกประยุทธ์ จันทร์โอชา ก่อการรัฐประหารโค่นรัฐบาลที่มาจากการเลือกตั้งตามระบอบประชาธิปไตยและเข้ายึดอำนาจเป็นรัฐบาลเผด็จการ ต่อมาในปี 2562 พลเอกประยุทธ์ได้รับเลือกเป็นนายกรัฐมนตรีอย่างไม่เป็นประชาธิปไตย เพราะการออกแบบระบบเลือกตั้งใหม่ที่เอื้อกับการสืบทอดอำนาจของคสช. ส่งผลให้คนไทยต้องอยู่ภายใต้การปกครองของทหารมาเป็นเวลาเกือบทศวรรษแล้ว! 🚨


ตั้งแต่นั้นเป็นต้นมา สถานการณ์ด้านสิทธิมนุษยชนในประเทศไทยมีแต่ถดถอยลงเรื่อยๆ ทั้งในพื้นที่ออนไลน์และออฟไลน์ รัฐบาลทหารจำกัดสิทธิในเสรีภาพในการแสดงออก เสรีภาพในการชุมนุม เสรีภาพในการรวมตัว และอื่นๆ อีกมากมาย ผ่านการใช้กฎหมายที่มีอยู่ในทางมิชอบ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นพ.ร.บ.คอมพิวเตอร์ หรือ มาตรา 112 โดยใช้กฎหมายเหล่านี้เป็นเครื่องมือเพื่อการปราบปรามขบวนการเพื่อประชาธิปไตย และปิดปากคนเห็นต่าง ที่แย่ไปกว่านั้น รัฐบาลประยุทธ์ยังบ่อนทำลายสิทธิชุมชนท้องถิ่นด้วยการให้ความสำคัญกับธุรกิจและผลกำไรเหนือประชาชนและโลกใบนี้!


💥เมื่อวันที่ 14 พ.ค. 2566 ที่ผ่านมา ประเทศไทยจัดการเลือกตั้งใหญ่เป็นครั้งที่ 2 ตั้งแต่การรัฐประหาร และนับเป็นครั้งแรกตั้งแต่มีการชุมนุมเพื่อเรียกร้องประชาธิปไตยทั่วประเทศ คนไทยได้แสดงเจตจำนงแล้วว่าต้องการรัฐบาลใหม่ที่มาจากกระบวนการประชาธิปไตยอย่างแท้จริง อย่างไรก็ตาม การต่อสู้เพื่อประชาธิปไตยยังไม่จบลงง่ายๆ แม้ทหารสืบทอดอำนาจจากการปฏิวัติรัฐประหารจะแพ้ในการเลือกตั้งครั้งนี้ แต่ก็ดูเหมือนยังจะไม่ยอมรับความพ่ายแพ้และพยายามขัดขวางกระแสธารแห่งความก้าวหน้าในทุกขั้นตอน
